MASSIVE BUILDING PROJECT UNDERWAY

One of the largest construction projects in downtown Ottawa is underway.

Montreal based companies Broccolini Construction Inc. and Canderel have started construction on a $150 million, 18-storey, 520,000 square-foot building at the corner of Slater and O'Connor streets that will be home to the new office of Export Development Canada.

"The new EDC headquarters will be a true signature building in the downtown core," said project manager, Anthony Broccolini.

The building, designed by architectural firm Beique, Legault, Thuot, will be the largest new office construction project in downtown Ottawa in the past 25 years.

Canderel chairman, Jonathan Wener said the building will be a "stunning" addition to the downtown core.

"This is a landmark project for us, our partner Broccolini, our client EDC, and the city of Ottawa," said Wener.

The builders are looking for LEED Gold certification, a third-party, nationally accepted benchmark for evaluating sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere efficiency, material and resource selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Broccolini's most recent involvement in the city was with the construction of the TELUS office tower.

Broccolini and Canderel, co-owners of the new building, were granted site plan approval by the city last month and EDC has signed a 20-year lease with the two companies.

Construction at the site began earlier this month and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2011.
